Question by Aonghas Shrugged: Is rise in linguistic fallacies/anachronisms here & amongst USA undergrads due to anti-Bible websites or the?
…lack of foreign language instruction in U.S. high schools and college Arts & Sciences programs?

OPTIONAL (if interested in classroom examples):

I’ve noticed that in the last 10 years my undergrads come into introductory religion courses with some very pitiful Bible-bashing arguments which I’m tempted to blame on a lot of the bogus anti-Bible websites. Linguistic illiterates who’ve never mastered a second language keep repeating anachronistic arguments like “The Bible is in error because it considers bats to be birds” and “it considers whales to be big fish.” I have to waste time explaining what the international students always seem to know on their own from being multi-lingual: different languages organize vocabulary and their semantic fields differently. (I’ve noticed that my Muslim students NEVER make these kinds of silly blunders.) The international students often ask me outside of class how the “American students made it into college without having to learn another language.” The answer is simple enough but because I’ve noticed a similar gullibility for linguistic fallacies on R&S, I’ve wondered if my colleagues are correct in saying that it is more often caused by the proliferation of the poorly compiled “Bible error and contradiction” websites. But since most of those (that are in English) seem to have been created by monolingual Americans, I wonder if we may be pursuing a chicken-or-the-egg phenomenon. But my graduate students tend to be aware of the same anti-Bible websites as the undergrads but they rarely fall for the same kinds of blunders — and yet they also are in most cases required by the area of concentration to be at least moderately bilingual. So which is it? Has the average American (USA) student’s lifetime of living in relative cultural isolation (making him/her monolingual and culturally naive) put him/her at an extreme disadvantage in understanding Biblical texts and contexts? I’m hearing “bloopers” in the classroom (which I have repeatedly traced back to bigoted “propaganda websites”) on a regular basis that were virtually unheard of back in the 60′s and 70′s. (Certainly there have always been a subset of students that have come into the classroom with their “guns loaded” with a cocky attitude that they are going to teach their professors what is wrong with various world religions and their texts. But in the old days the students were much more likely to have their facts straight! Now we seem to regularly deal with having to “unlearn” a lot of fallacies students have picked up online. I cringe when I read student papers reflecting online “research.”)

So Is the rise in bogus linguistic fallacies & anachronisms here & amongst USA undergrads due to the anti-Bible websites or lack of language instruction or is one helping to cause the other?
† (CROSS SYMBOL):
Thanks for your thoughts. That’s a very interesting way of looking at it and I would encourage you to post it as a “question” in order to encourage reactions pro and con.
THE POOR WIDOW: ‘Atheism is the “cool” thing right now.’ Yes, I’ve noticed that! It usually doesn’t take long to figure out which students have seriously investigated the subject and which ones are adopting it as a way of being perceived to be an “independent thinker” or whatever. I say that in part because the “serious atheists” approach it so much differently.
* * * * * * * * * * **

THANK YOU to all of you who put serious thought into your replies. Much appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by Liberal Asskicker
Tracing anachronisms is impossible.

You don’t have a complete evolution of the development of the Bible, nor do you have any original documents.

(Be sure that your claims aren’t as ridiculous as your students, or someone might think that you’re a fake teacher, like me.)

Question by : What is it with”Fisherman map” In Russia? Is it true one only can fish in the area of the residency for free?
I saw something on NTV yesterday, there was a dude on Tina Kandilaki show.
I did not get it. They were saying about fishermen map, like a fisher must pay fee or membership to fish. Only kids, senior citizens can fish for free and those who fish in water of their residency. Like they have to bring passport to a river or something.

Do you guys need Chippolino? It sounds like Gianni Rodari tale. What else the government want to get their money from?

Best answer:

Answer by Cossak
Its actually not our govt, its our rich greedy people do. They illegally rent lands which can be the city municipal property or the state property. Just giving bribe to local officials. Then they make lake, river part a private zone where fisherman will need to pay 40$ for a day. By law owners must make a fisher zone with caffee, toilets and etc. But they don’t do it of course and people who fished there from childhood for free don’t pay,so it born lot of conflicts. Corrupted police don’t do anything. Only one a good example was when some of our city prosecutors found that he need to pay for entering in the city municipal river side park, there beach and big park zone with WW2 monuments. So after him they gone away and now its again free entering for cars. This country so sick and all fault only on us. We by nature are all peasants and if some of us getting power and money, his soul becoming rotten. They will bribe, buy,do everything just for their ego and never care about people with whom these fat cats live.

Question by Gladys: When someone gives you a “gift”, does it give you any insight as to what that person thinks about you?
For example, my sister-in-law dropped by with a “gift” for us on Sunday. She blatantly said it was just a tacky gift that was given to them, but she has no need for it because it does not fit in with the decor in their house. She thought it would fit in with the style that we have our house decorated in. When I opened the gift, it was a “Billy Bass” motion-activated singing fish that flaps and sings “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” when you walk by it. She said it would fit right in with the decor in our formal dining room. I never was sure of what she thinks of my decorating style, but now I have a better idea after receiving that gift. Have you every had that happen to you and how did you respond?
Yes, my sister-in-law is the real thing. I could not make up some of the things she says or does! Just last night she . . . well, that’ll be another question!

Best answer:

Answer by Anen
I have never had that happen to me personally but I have seen it done to friends of mine. I would have to say that you’re sister-in-law basically insulted your taste in furniture, well your tastes in general. I would be insulted especially after the comments she made while giving you the “gift”. Just throw the “Billy Bass” in the garbage if you don’t want it and the next time she comes to visit and questions you about it just tell her it’s in the garbage where it belongs. I know I sound a little harsh but she deserves it.
