Is it legal to use a treble hook when using tip-ups and live bait in Minnesota?

I normally use a sinlge hook, but a freind swears that you can use a treble hook when tip-up fishing.

Regulation: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/fishing/fishing2010.pdf

“Anglers may use only one hook. An artificial lure is considered one hook.
A treble hook, when not part of an artificial lure, is considered three hooks
and is not legal. The exception is that three artificial flies may be used
when angling for trout, crappie, sunfish, and rock bass.
• Anglers may use only one line during the open water season and two
through the ice (other than on designated trout lakes and streams) unless
otherwise noted”

Indeed that is what the regulations say. You see this is what happens when people that have no clue about fishing draw up the regulations for fishing and or when one particular mindset (in this case the fly fisherman) is allowed to make the regulations for the whole group. I suggest you get a quorum of folks to make a mass letter mailing to correct this hook snafu, because it really doesn’t effect fishing one way or another whether you use a treble hook or a single hook.

The only difference is in a catch and release scenario in this case single barb-less hooks are the easiest to remove from fish and in fly fishing only area’s this rule is predominantly and justifiably applied. But for the general fishing requirement where people are fishing to keep their catch the rule should not apply.

that’s what it says, all right. no treble hooks when using bait.
strange, many legal artificials have two or three trebles.
l guess this is to prevent fish from becoming hooked too deeply with a treble hook then dying upon it’s difficult removal. fine if the fish is kept but if it’s release is necessary, a standard single hook is safer.
the majority of fish hooked on the artificial lures are just hooked in the lip or jaw and can be easily and safely released.
