offshore: 3+ miles from land
inshore:less than 3 miles from land
nearshore: the surf, inlets, and back bays
hope this helps
good luck and good fishing
offshore is about 5+ miles, inshore .1-3 miles, nearshore 0-1 miles
Many fisherman use these terms loosely. There is no “set” term. However, here is what I believe is the correct designation, (esp in regards to fishermen slang).
Inshore saltwater fishing mostly occurs in estuary’s, rivers, bays, flats & creeks that flood into saltwater. (Inshore=Inland waters) Saltwater Fisherman sometimes include “coastal” waters as “Inshore fishing” waters.
Offshore fishing would be between 1-50 miles off a mainland or Island. (Offshore=Off the shore)
Near-shore waters would be between 0-1 mile Offshore, (or off a mainland or island). Some would consider near-shore anything within sight of land. (Nearshore= near the shore but NOT inside a bay or estuary flooding into the ocean.)
In any regard, you def went Offshore fishing. 20 miles out on ANY body of water is “offshore” whether it was in the Ocean or on Lake Superior.
